Auliʻi Cravalho, renowned for her role as Moana in Disney's animated film in 2016, will not be reprising her titular character in the recently announced live-action adaptation. However, she will play a crucial role as an executive producer in the production of the film.
Cravalho, in a video shared on her verified Instagram account, expressed her gratitude for the life-changing opportunity she received when she was cast as Moana at the age of 14. She emphasized the importance of accurate casting that truly represents the characters and stories being portrayed in the live-action retelling.
As an executive producer, Cravalho eagerly anticipates the search for the next actress who will embody Moana's courageous spirit, undeniable wit, and emotional strength. She considers it a great honor to pass on the baton to a young woman of Pacific Island descent who will pay tribute to the incredible people, cultures, and communities that inspired the story of Moana.
In April, Dwayne Johnson, who voiced the character Maui in the animated film, announced through his own social media that the live-action version of "Moana" was officially in development. He expressed deep humility in bringing this beautiful story to the big screen, emphasizing its significance in representing his culture and showcasing the grace, mana, and warrior strength of his people.
The original animated film "Moana" was a phenomenal success at the box office, grossing over $600 million worldwide. While Cravalho will not be seen as Moana in the live-action adaptation, fans will have the opportunity to hear her voice once again as the character in a musical animated continuation series for Disney, also titled "Moana," currently in pre-production.
